What exactly does it take — for you — to become a great community youth leader? Let s have a look!
Your Attitude
To begin with, you need the correct mindset. Humility may be an overrated quality, but that just emphasises its importance when you step forward to serve as a leader in the community. Aim to serve others instead of seeking to gain recognition. Remember, your sincerity will show through.
Be dependable - execute your duties properly!
Be responsible for your actions, and for all that you promise to undertake. In other words, be reliable.
This way, you will be able to gain the respect and trust of others who work with you or come into contact with you. In return, respect them as well. This builds up the relationships you have with these people, which will make it easier to connect with them in the future.
Interact effectively!Communication skills are important to be able to connect with the people. Sometimes when you are making your ideas known to others, you have to be aware of the concerns of your audience, and be able to address these as well. For example, if you are speaking to a group of volunteers whose concerns are the under-privileged in the community, it will be helpful if you propose ways that will aid them in helping these people.
Facilitate your project wellBe open to opinions and active participation of your team. When discussing plans or issues with your project mates, be respectful of others inputs, and seek to better them instead of putting them down. See yourself not as a person of high authority but as someone of equal level to your peers. That way, they will not be afraid to put forth their opinions and suggestions, which will be valuable to the discussion. Be decisive at the same time, however, instead of being easily swayed by the bombardment of views. Be sure of the direction the discussion is going, and guide your teammates through. Know the objectives of discussions and ensure that these are achieved ultimately.
Serve with your heartHave a heart of compassion this way, your actions will be spurred by this passion to reach out to those in need. These less fortunate people need a voice, someone to speak up for them and make their plight known. Be ready, then, to take the initiative to make a difference. Don t be afraid of starting small. Even the most seemingly insignificant action will mean something to somebody.
So, r u born to be a leader?
